IFEM - looking ahead

posted 24 Dec 2011, 21:39 by SSCCEM Sri Lanka

Dear IFEM colleagues,

This is just to wish everyone season’s greetings across the whole IFEM family, whether you are in the middle of summer and heading to the beach for a swim or rugged up and having tea by the fireside. It has been an enormous year for emergency medicine, including some major wins - formal recognition of EM training courses in countries such as India and Vietnam, introduction of the IFEM symposia, publication of the postgraduate curriculum and many other projects underway. There have been a few negatives, most notably the treatment of health professionals in EM whilst caring for emergency patients in some regions in the Middle East. It does remind us that sometimes we have to fight for what are basic human rights in providing emergency care.

Next year is shaping up to be a really important period in the evolution of EM. The 2012 Dublin ICEM meeting will be a time for all of us to meet and hear the latest in emergency medicine. It will also be a time where we can develop consensus on important EM topics such as quality indicators in EM, paediatric standards, research agendas, disaster medicine and ultrasound training. I would encourage everyone to try to make it to Dublin and engage in the dialogue both before and after this major event. There is now a huge amount of collaboration internationally and a genuine spirit of collective clinical and scientific endeavour to ensure optimal outcomes for emergency patients.

I would also like to thank those who continue to commit their time and enthusiasm to the work that we do.

I look forward, with you, to another great year.
