Advanced Life Support (ALS) Course

Advanced Life Support (ALS) course was organized by SSCCEM for the first time as a pre-congress workshop in SSCCEM 2012. It was conducted on the 1st and 2nd of November, 2012 at the Med1 premises in Ratmalana.

The program coordinator for SSCCEM was Dr. Srilal de Silva the current President of SSCCEM. The ALS Course coordinator was Dr. Andy Ratchford an Australian Emergency Physician who brought a team of Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) trained specialists with him. A group of 24 candidates were selected from a large number of doctors who wanted to get selected and the workshop ran for two days with all 24 people getting through and several were selected as future trainers.

Trainees were given a course manual free of charge and a pre-course MCQ and a evaluation test was done at the end of the program. The workshop had five skills stations with BLS/ALS/Airway/ECG etc discussed and put into practise with simulations using high tech i-simulators.

Among participants were several consultant physicians, critical care medicine diploma holders and many other doctors in the fields of emergency medicine and anaesthesia. The program was a new experience for many and it was very effective for skills development. The Australian trainers were happy with the program and were keen on organising similar events regularly with SSCCEM.
